Two beluga whales released after ten years of captivity
Sine 2011, beluga whales “Little Grey” and “Little White” have been held in the Shanghai (Shedd) aquarium. The two performed as show animals for nearly a decade, keeping them captive from their natural habitat.
The SEA LIFE Trust foundation first got involved with Little Grey and Little White in 2019. The whale duo was first transported from the aquarium to a care facility in order to prep for ocean water. During their time spent in the facility the belugas were introduced to natural sea life plants such as flora and fauna.
“We’re absolutely delighted to be able to share the news that Little Grey and Little White are safely in their sea sanctuary care pools and are just one step away from being released into their wider open water home”Andy Bool, Head of SEA LIFE Trust.
“Over 300 belugas are currently held in captivity worldwide. Belugas live up to 60 years in the open ocean, but often 30 or less under ownership.”THE WHALE AND DOLPHIN CONSERVATION
In mid-August, Little Grey and Little White were brought to the world’s first open-water whale sanctuary located in Klettsvik Bay, Iceland. They are both 12-years-old and are estimated to live well into their 40’s based off these new conditions.
