Homemade Herbal Tea Recipes

Published

on

Herbal tea has gained popularity in recent years due to their relaxing actions and countless benefits. Herbs such as chamomile and peppermint can relieve muscle cramps and menstrual cramps while chamomile tea promotes relaxation and drowsiness. They are super easy to brew and don’t need to be as precise as making regular tea like green tea.

What Is Herbal Tea?

Unlike black tea or green tea, herbal tea is not made from leaves of camellia sinensis (the tea plant). Instead, it is made from herbs, flowers, spices, or dried fruit. There’s no caffeine in herbal tea, meaning you can drink it all day without it keeping you up at night. Below are some of the most popular herbal drinks to make from right in your kitchen.

Chamomile Tea

OHHOWCIVILIZED.COM

Chamomile tea is a poplar herbal infusion made from dried chamomile flowers. Chamomile is a great relaxation and sleep aid so try this if you have trouble falling asleep! People have also used this flower plant to help relieve stomach problems and ease anxiety.

What You’ll Need

  • Chamomile loose tea or tea sachet
  • Filtered water
  • Teapot with strainer
  • Electric kettle with temperature setting
  1. Boil water with the electric kettle. We recommend boiling more water than needed for the cup so you can use the extra water to warm up the teapot.
  2. Pour some hot water into the teapot and swirl it around. Discard the water afterwards.
  3. Put chamomile loose tea into the teapot and add hot water.
  4. Cover teapot and steep for 5 minutes. Herbal tea won’t get bitter when it over-steeps so it’s okay if it’s a little longer than 5 minutes!
  5. Finally strain the chamomile flowers and pour hot tea into a teacup.

Hibiscus Tea

OHHOWCIVILIZED.COM

Hibiscus tea is a refreshing drink made from steeping dried hibiscus flowers in water. The hibiscus plant is a large, bright colored flower grown in tropical regions. Many know the popular drink as a tea which has a reddish tint to it. Some studies have found that hibiscus could also lower blood pressure.

What You’ll Need

  • Hibiscus loose tea or tea bags
  • Filtered water
  • Teapot with strainer
  • Electric kettle with temperature setting
  1. Using an electric kettle with a temperature setting, set the water to 208 degrees Fahrenheit and boil the water.
  2. Pour some hot water into the teapot and swirl it around. Discard the water afterwards.
  3. Put hibiscus tea into the teapot and add hot water.
  4. Cover the teapot and steep for 5 minutes.
  5. Strain hibiscus flowers and pour hot tea into a teacup. If you would like your tea sweetened, add some sugar, honey, or date syrup to your teacup.

Peppermint Tea

OHHOWCIVILIZED.COM

Peppermint tea is by far the most popular mint and peppermint tea is made by steeping peppermint leaves in water. It’s grown everywhere but originated in Europe and Asia. Peppermint can be used to treat headaches, breathing problems, and irritable bowel syndrome. It also helps relieve menstrual pain.

What You’ll Need

  • Loose or sachet peppermint tea

  • Electric kettle with temperature setting
  1. Using an electric kettle with a temperature setting, set the water to 208 degrees Fahrenheit and boil the water.

The Latest Caffeine Craze: Matcha

Published

on

Healthline

Over the past year or so, we’ve notice so many guys and gals carrying around these myserious green drinks, and we couldn’t help but wonder…WTF is that?! After doing some research, we found out that it’s the latest caffeine craze…matcha!

GIPHY

Some of your favorite coffee spots like Dunkin and Starbucks have been attracting matcha fanatics with shots, lattes, and even Matcha donuts. It’s no wonder that this drink has become so hip as of late…there are so many amazing health benefits associated with drinking (or eating matcha)! Allow us to share.

Matcha is antioxidant-rich! Matcha has been found to contain catechins, natural antioxidants which are only found in this strain of green tea. Antioxidants are super powerful because they are known to prevent aging and fight off diseases. Just one cup of matcha has as many antioxidants as ten cups of your basic green tea. WOW.

Matcha improves brain function. Of course, matcha is caffeinated. The caffeine concentration in matcha is about 35mg per 1/2 tsp. Caffeine (as we know), is linked to improved attention span, reaction time, and memory. It also contains L-theanine, which is known to have calming effects. Sounds like we will be placing an Amazon Prime order for this stuff ASAP.

Matcha can be linked to cancer prevention. You heard that right! Studies on animals have shown that compounds in matcha such as ECCG inhibit the growth of certain cancer.

Matcha is heart healthy. Studies have found that when supplemented with a healthy diet, matcha can have heart disease preventing powers. Green tea has been shown to reduce levels of “LDL’s” or bad cholesterol.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, you’re probably wondering: “how the heck do I get my hands on this magical, caffeinated beverage?” Not to worry, we’ve got some matcha inspired recipes and helpful hints for ordering on the go!

Skinny Iced Matcha Latte

Cooking with Jamica

What you will need

  • 1 1/2 cups of milk…we use non-fat milk or oat milk when we don’t want dairy…it’s so creamy!
  • 2 tsp of matcha powder…you can find it pretty much anywhere nowadays, but of course, we love that Amazon Prime 2-day delivery
  • 2 pumps of vanilla syrup…when we’re trying to keep it light, we like this one.

What you’ll need to do

  1. In a tall glass, add in the milk, matcha powder and vanilla syrup.
  2. Mix it all together! To ensure there are no chunks of powder (ew!), and that the blend is smooth, we like to use a coffee blender like this one.
  3. Pour in about a cup of ice and enjoy!

Matcha Cupcakes

Kitchen Stories

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp of maple syrup

For the frosting

  • 1 cup of whipping cream
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of matcha powder

What You Will Need to Do

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line your muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: buttermilk, oil, egg and maple syrup.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift the dry ingredients: flour, matcha powder, and baking soda/powder. Then add the salt and sugar. Whisk it all up!
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, and stir until it becomes a smooth batter.
  5. Distribute even parts into the cupcake liners and bake for about 16 minutes.
  6. For the frosting, beat together the ingredients until it forms whipped cream. Transfer into a piping bag, and frost once the cupcakes have cooled

On the Go Ordering

Elite Daily

Starbucks was one of the first major coffee chains to introduce their very own matcha drinks! There are so many fun ways to modify your drink order to make it even more delicious!

We recommend ordering a grande iced matcha latte with two pumps of sugar-free vanilla, and two pumps of chai for a perfectly spiced drink!

For a super unique experience, order the iced matcha latte with salted cream cold foam on top.

Cheers!
